Poetry Shenanigans – Wrap & Roll … Lock & Load

Wrap & Roll … Lock & Load

Be a wraith,
Embrace the hate,
Be a ghost,
Barely there,
Yet ever-present,
For,
They’re the ones who lost their faith.
Stand tall,
After every fall,
The harder you go down,
The harder you fight your way back to the top.
This is your life,
Your match,
Your march,
Your parade.
You’re the victor,
Your scars,
Are mere tales engraved.
They’re a sign,
Of the residual fire that remains.
That burns brighter,
Every single day,
Relentless and unforgiving,
A blaze,
That razes all the doubts and haters,
Who make the mistake of getting in your way.
Here comes the next blow,
Roll with the punches,
Take a hit, two or many more.
Take a hit till they can’t hit anymore.
Test your mettle, flex your steel.
Take it all in,
Until the day you make your stand.
Plant those feet, dig them in.
One, two, three,
Here we go.
Block, jab, cross your way,
And when you see your moment,
Don’t hold back,
Take them down,
It’s time for a TKO.

Poetry Shenanigans – Measuring Up

Measuring Up

There was no script,
Preordered, prewritten,
No scene preordained
Tossed, hurled,
Twirled and hurtled,
Towards the chaotic serenity,
Called life.
They said dream,
Like nobody has ever dreamt,
Run from pillar to post,
Spend your youth,
Within the four walls,
Of temples of knowledge,
Among like minded blank
slates,
Like yourself.
They said study harder,
Apply yourself harder,
The books will save you,
The words phrasing equations,
Framing laws of gravity,
Dabbling in grammar and syntax,
Whilst churning out literature and
philosophy.
Then, as you get older,
Your dreams are invalid and
negated,
You’re told to give up chasing
Other worldly visions,
That you once called dreams,
Goals and passions you once coveted.
Told to trade in your foolish ideals,
For the lessons of harsh reality,
Where you’re told,
All the lessons you were once taught,
In your foolish youth,
About kindness and compassion,
Love, peace and intolerance,
Were nothing more than,
Fables, tales, mere fiction.
How else can you justify,
All the hatred? All the destruction?
How can you be the same tongue?
That talks sweet nothings about love
and peace?
And be the tongue that lashes out at
me,
For all my differences?
For all that you dictate with terms and
conditions?
How dare you tell me to live to dream,
And savour freedom,
Only to mock me,
For my ‘naivety,’
Of daring to dream.
How can you root for hope and light,
In a world so unsteady,
Trembling and unstable,
By forces of hate, anger and envy?
How can you ask for better?
When you’d rather only focus,
On what you colour as weakness,
And label as the worst?
How can you hope for a bright future?
For all the children, for tomorrow’s future?
When all you’ve done,
Is quash, squash and destroy,
All forms of inquiry, curiosity,
and discovery,
To the minds and souls that matter most?

Poetry Shenanigans – Quest

Quest

Who knew looking for God,
In all these cases, vacant spaces and places,
Would lead to stumbling thoughts, jagged truths,
Scattered concepts of self and dream stasis?

Poetry Shenanigans – Battle-Worn

In celebration of World Poetry Day, here’s a poem for one and for all. Happy writing & most importantly, happy muse hunting!

Battle-Worn

Rivulets of anger,
Tears of frustration and fear,
Music that just plays on,
These are the things,
Wars are built on.
Ravage, pillage,
Be a savage,
Ignore the screams,
Begging and pleading for mercy.
No survivors,
Only scars,
Only reminders,
To remind you time after time,
Of all that once was,
And all that’s now left behind.

Poetry Shenanigans – Fault Lines

Fault Lines

Pushed down, Pushed around, Pushed away,
Funny how people think you’ll still stick around,
Despite all the bitterness, heartache and acrid words hurled your way,
To make it work against all odds; Only to blame you when it all crumbles away.

Poetry Shenanigans – Lifesaver

I thought I’d play around a little bit more with style and formats, so here’s a poetry experiment for Wonderful Wednesday. Hope everyone is doing great!

Lifesaver

Do you consider yourself worth saving?
Have you seen yourself in the mirrors that matter most?
Have you seen what you look like through those eyes?
The ones that ground you and anchor your soul?
Do you know what fear feels like?
While watching pieces of you disappear and dissipate?
While watching the elements that once made you,
Fall apart and be replaced by this unrecognizable version of you?
Do you know what loss feels like?
It feels like those grains of sand slipping through your fingers,
That you just can’t seem to hold on to, no matter how hard you try.
I would know because I’ve tried.
Do you know what darkness feels like?
I feel like you do,
Since the only bits of you that remain in my line of sight nowadays,
Is nothing more than a mere shadow,
That lets me know of your existence and nothing else.
Fear is when I wake up thinking today might be the last day,
Today might just be the last time I get to say,
Those three precious words,
That once made your day,
Once was the brightest ray to cast it’s brilliant light your way,
But now is just another way of me asking you to stay,
Another way to say the only words to let you know it’s okay,
That I’m always here regardless of the constraints time seems to
toss your way.
And in time you will see the power of those three words,
As they wrap their way around your very being,
And guide the way.
Head over heart, heart over head,
The eternal battle of damnation that keeps waging war on your sanity,
Makes you question your mental faculties,
Makes you reconsider your life’s priorities.
One day you shall see,
Love has no boundaries,
No qualms about breaking down and tearing apart those walls,
You once thought were indestructible,
That you built so carefully around those parts of you guarded most cautiously.
One day you will see, that not all is what it always seems to be,
And that the ones in your life who were meant to be,
Never withdrew or walked away,
But were just waiting for the day where you’d finally ask them to stay.

Poetry Shenanigans – Burn

Burn

Burning, flaring, glaring,
Angry sparks, fiery flames,
Licking away, burning apart all that was hidden,
To make way for something new.

Poetry Shenanigans – Dictated Lies… Dictated Lives

Dictated Lies … Dictated Lives

The only beautiful
Anybody wants to be,
Is the kind they can control,
The kind that comes with
instructions and demos,
You know,
The kind you can fit in a box,
By relinquishing control,
And be told,
That this is for your benefit,
This will give you power
and control over your life,
Without losing your mind.
Convinced by a lie,
Where you’re told,
This is for you,
This is what you need,
To be better, stronger,
Exquisite, visible and striking,
To all those distracted and ignorant
eyes,
That never gave you a moment,
That just passed you by.
Another lie sold,
And you’re constantly told,
This is what makes heads turn,
This is what makes cities burn.
This is what power is.
All these empty promises,
Eat you up whole,
Gone are your dreams,
Gone is your passion,
Gone is that smile,
Once radiant, once hopeful,
In it’s place,
Is something rehearsed,
Something mechanical.
Gone are those things,
That once defined you as driven.
And that place deep within you,
Where there once was a soul,
All that’s left in it’s place,
Is a singed, gaping hole.

Poetry Shenanigans – Home

Sometimes, we all need a reminder of the things that anchor & ground us. Here’s to celebrating that which let’s us find a piece of ourselves, when we’re all but lost, all that inspires us when we set out on our quests & journeys of discovery.

Home

It’s funny,
As time passes you by,
Regardless of where it is
you go,
Where your heart takes you,
And the paths that you follow,
One thing is for sure,
There will never be,
A place like home.
